Greece Announces Additional COVID-19 Tax Support2020-05-28 10:29:38

On May 20, 2020, the Greek Ministry of Finance announced its phased approach to the reopening and supporting of the economy following the COVID-19 pandemic.

 

The fourth phase of the plan includes numerous tax measures, which include:

 

Suspension of approved tax debt installment payments in June for businesses that remain closed and for companies in the tourism, catering, transport, culture and sports sectors.

 

Tax relief for property owners who rent to affected businesses and individuals.

 

Reduced advance corporate tax payments for 2020 and 2021 for businesses that experienced a decrease in turnover in March, April, and May 2020, with the reductions to be based on the percent decrease experienced by a company in turnover.

 

An increase in the deduction for research and development spending from 30 to 100 percent for eligible expenses incurred from September 1, 2020.

 

Phase four of the plan also includes a reduction in VAT from 24 to 13 percent for various supplies for the period from June 1 to October 31, 2020, including:

Passenger transport, including by train, metro and tram, city and intercity buses, aircraft, ship, and combined transport; coffee and non-alcoholic beverages; and cinema tickets.
